Most people are right to believe that the some of the most diverse ecosystems in the world are located in tropical rainforests or rich estuaries; but, according to a recent study, one of the most diverse places on the planet is located in the soil of one of the most active cities in the world- New York City.
Just recently, scientists carried out research on the soil below Central Park inside New York City. This research included the scanning of any specific life or microbial strains located inside the soil, and their findings were staggering. In the results, they found that they were only able to identify around 16% of the microbes that were thriving underneath the city, and the others were unknown. This proves to be an environment in which there is an extreme amount of biodiversity in a location that is least expected to have so.
These shocking results called for an answer to how this is possibly more diverse and mild-climate in which more strains of life can survive. The reason that they came up with was that most microbial strains are more concerned in their specific environment, in which would be the soil rather than the environment around them. This soil underneath Central Park is a perfect harvest for millions of microbe and other forms of life to thrive.
